Assumes each RMD is withdrawn, nothing else is added or taken out, and your spouse isn’t more than 10 years younger and your only beneficiary.
Start ages
When do RMDs start?
The SECURE 2.0 Act of 2022 raised the starting age, so it depends on the year you were born:
| Born | RMDs start at |
|---|---|
| Before 1951 | 72 |
| 1951 to 1959 | 73 |
| 1960 or later | 75 |
The formula

How your RMD is calculated
Each year’s RMD is your account balance on December 31 of the previous year divided by a life-expectancy factor from the IRS Uniform Lifetime Table for the age you reach that year. At age 75 the factor is 24.6, so a $500,000.00 balance means an RMD of $20,325.20. The factor gets smaller every year, so the share you must withdraw rises as you age.
- Balance on Dec 31, 2025
- $500,000.00
- IRS factor at age 75
- ÷ 24.6
- This year’s RMD
- $20,325.20
Accounts

Which accounts have RMDs?
- Traditional, SEP, and SIMPLE IRAs.
- Pre-tax money in workplace plans such as 401(k) and 403(b) plans.
- Not Roth IRAs while the original owner is alive, and, starting in 2024, not Roth accounts in workplace plans either.
Limits
What this calculator doesn’t cover
- If your spouse is more than 10 years younger and is your only beneficiary, the IRS uses a different table that results in smaller RMDs.
- Inherited IRAs follow separate rules.
- If you’re still working, you may be able to delay RMDs from your current employer’s plan.
- It estimates the required withdrawal only, not the income tax you’ll owe on it.
Questions
Frequently asked questions
- Can I withdraw more than my RMD?
- Yes. The RMD is only the minimum. Anything extra is a regular taxable withdrawal, and it doesn't reduce next year's required amount.
- Do I need to take an RMD from every account?
- For IRAs, you can add up the RMDs for all of your IRAs and take the total from any one or more of them. Workplace plans such as 401(k)s generally require a separate RMD from each plan.
- How are RMDs taxed?
- RMDs from pre-tax accounts count as ordinary income in the year you take them, so they can push you into a higher tax bracket and, two years later, raise your Medicare premiums.
- Can Roth conversions lower my future RMDs?
- Converting pre-tax savings to a Roth IRA before RMDs begin shrinks the balance future RMDs are based on. You pay income tax on each conversion, so how much you convert and when matters.
- What happens if I miss an RMD?
- The IRS charges an excise tax on the amount you should have withdrawn. Under SECURE 2.0 it is 25%, or 10% if you fix the shortfall within the IRS correction window.
