The idea

A couple in their forties walking hand in hand along a long, winding path, past trees that turn from spring blossom to bare winter branches.

A retirement isn’t one number. It’s thirty-odd years.

Each of those years has its own income, spending, and tax bill. Most retirement calculators answer a single question: do you have enough? But the decisions that matter play out over many years—when to stop working, when to claim Social Security, whether to convert savings to a Roth, how required distributions will land.

Velafolio keeps a line for every year, so you can see what each choice changes, and when.

Questions

A woman in her forties at a desk by the window, chin in hand, thinking something over beside an open notebook and a cup of coffee.

The questions that shape a retirement

  1. When should I claim Social Security?

Compare claiming at 62, at your full retirement age, and at 70, for you and your spouse, and see the age at which waiting starts to pay off.

Each year you wait past full retirement age raises your benefit, up to age 70.

  2. Should I convert savings to a Roth IRA?

Model conversions over the years you choose, then compare lifetime taxes and what you leave behind against not converting at all.

A conversion is taxed as income in the year you make it, and a large one can raise Medicare premiums two years later.

  3. When do my required distributions start, and how large will they be?

See the start age for your birth year, each year’s required amount, and how it adds to your taxable income.

Under SECURE 2.0, RMDs start at 73 if you were born from 1951 to 1959, and at 75 if you were born in 1960 or later.

  4. What if I retire two years earlier?

Copy your plan, change one thing, and keep both versions to compare.

You can keep up to 20 versions of your plan.
